Text: ```Matthew 12:36-37 NKJV
But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
COMMENTARY
This same caution of Jesus about our words is coined in the legal lexicon as Judges rule 4. If a person says that he wants to make a statement he shall be told that it is intended to make a written record of what he says. The police would use such words: "you may remain silent, whatever you say now may be used against you in the law Court." This common practice of police officer is known as Miranda Warning.
In Nigeria, the provision for the Miranda warning can be found in Section 35 of the Nigerian Police (Establishment) Act 2020. This section states that “A person who is arrested shall be informed of his right to remain silent and to have an attorney present before any statement is taken from him.” Jesus warned His disciples about the danger of using idle words. You can implicate yourself with your own words but silence cannot implicate you.
Do you really give your own attorney space in your life or you open your mouth anytime to respond to anything without the presence of your attorney? Jesus Christ is our attorney, advocate and counselor. Accepting His person through the ministry of Holy Spirit would keep you safe from intimidation of spiritual forces and as well regulate your physical activities with authorities and powers that be.
Food for thought: Our words can become our pitfall.
Prayer: ```Save me from ignorance and guide me out of every evil of using idle words in Jesus name.```
